Mini tornado hits Danao village

10:02 AM May 17, 2013

TENSION briefly gripped residents of barangay Maslog in Danao City yesterday after a waterspout occurred in the northern Cebu village.
State meteorologists in Mactan are investigating the weather phenomenon.
Engr. Oscar Tabada, Pagasa Mactan station chief, said the phenomenon happens at least five times in a decade. “It’s rare. I have observed that it happens five times for the past ten years,” Tabada said.
“Because of the warming of our temperature, the possibility of the occurrence would grow big. Inalisngaw sa yuta, mosaka sa ibabaw, mu-porma ug inana nga klase sa panganod,” he said.
Tabada said that what happened yesterday is just a local occurrence which means only the residents of Maslog felt the waterspout.
Pagasa’s weather monitor said there was no warning of tornado from 2-5 p.m. yesterday. Weather observer  Raphael Tapales said that perhaps the occurrence is beyond their radar’s detection capability.
Meanwhile, Tabada said that while summer is not yet over, they are expecting one or two tropical cyclones this month. /Correspondent Christine Emily L. Pantaleon
