Vote as Jesus would, prelate advises faithful

For whom would Jesus vote?

Warning that the Catholic Church would “always end up the loser” if it engaged in partisan politics, Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas on Saturday urged Church leaders to avoid endorsing specific candidates.

In a powerful pastoral letter on the coming elections, Villegas said endorsing candidates would “compromise” the Church’s spiritual mission, adding that the Church “must guide and not dictate,” and help unite society instead of causing more divisions.

“When the Church endorses candidates in political elections she always ends up a loser. The endorsed candidate may win the votes but the Church never wins with him,” said Villegas.

He said candidates the Church may endorse might win “but [then] religion has been reduced to a political party.”

“Religion has been used for political gain and our spiritual mission has been compromised. We will be lonesome widows after the elections for marrying partisan politics during the campaign,” he said.

“If Jesus would vote, for whom would he vote? Vote like Jesus. If you cannot find Jesus from among the candidates, just make sure you do not make Judas or Barabbas win. If you sell your vote, you sell something sacred, you make yourself a cousin of Judas, too,” he said.

Several dioceses and Catholic groups, including the influential El Shaddai charismatic movement, have endorsed candidates in the May elections, particularly those who opposed the reproductive health (RH) law.

But Villegas, who has also been critical of the RH law, said the Church must pray and not add to the confusion of electoral politics and provide healing instead of causing more hurt.

“The Church must refuse to play with the fire of political power or it risks burning herself. The Church does not win when her endorsed candidate wins. The Church should not be perceived as winning or losing an election. The Church must be beyond such,” said Villegas.

“Paraphrasing the Lord in the Garden of Agony, those who live by the sword will die by the sword. Religions that waltz with politics will die by politics,” he said.

Villegas said the Church would “win” only if it helps ensure the elections would be peaceful and honest.

“When elections are morally credible and losers and winners stay civil and courteous, the Church wins,” Villegas said.

“When every vote is cast from conscience and not from convenience, the Church has truly become the former of conscience and has shown herself to be a mother and teacher faithful and obedient to her Master and Lord,” he said.

“Candidates and voters are children of the Church. Candidates against one another are brothers and sisters in God,” he added.

But while he said the Church should not endorse specific candidates, it could recommend whom not to vote for.

Villegas said the Church should remain the “conscience” of society and speak out prophetically against abuses.

He urged Catholics not to vote for candidates who cannot declare a categorical and clear no to divorce, abortion, euthanasia, total birth control and homosexual marriages, or candidates linked to illegal drugs.

Villegas said voters should also avoid candidates who had been convicted and those who support black sand mining or tolerate irresponsible quarrying and illegal fish pens.

“Nature is our mother. If you can rape your own mother, what else will you do?” the archbishop said.

He said candidates with no track record of helping the poor or those who give away money and use goons should also be shunned.

Villegas also urged Catholics to avoid candidates who show off their religiosity during elections but are actually antagonistic to Church teachings.

“Corruption and hypocrisy are twins. [Avoid also] the candidate [who] is unfaithful to his or her spouse and children. Corruption begins at home,” he said.

Villegas also urged voters to avoid candidates who have other members of their immediate family already in government.

“Promoting family welfare and promoting the common good cannot mix. We submit these guidelines to you and plead with you to bring them to prayer,” he said.

What a wonderful lip service blurted out by one who only sees the end results of environmental degradation. Because if you dig deeper into the cause of environment destruction, it would really point to uncontrolled population growth in our country. It would turn out the Catholic Church is mainly responsible for the destruction of our environment for encouraging people to populate some more, disregarding the fact that poverty brought about by big family could drive people to deplete and destroy their environment.

Kung si Jesus Mangas naman ang tinutukoy dito, dapat tanungin si Jesus kung sino-sinong mga future na MMM ang pipiliin nya. UNA, god ang ginamit…"god is with us". Nang hindi pinakinggan ng god at sa kabila pumanig, si Jesus naman ngayon. Sino ang susunod is Joseph o si Moses? Laking ka-anuhan!

DO what Jesus did. Based on stories, he was not a pedo, filcher, an illegal trader, a political kibitzer, nor a carpetbagger. He did not engage in those many other nasty and abominable activities that those who profess to follow his footsteps commit blatantly. To those who say those dastardly acts were done by ONLY SOME misguided missiles……I say ONE TIME is more than enough.

Okey, Mitos Magsaysay, a faithful follower of the corrupt Gloria Arroyo, is a member of the Team Buhay of the Catholic Church bishops. Will Jesus vote for her? Certainly not but why is she not being taken out of the Team Buhay list? Because the making of the Team Buhay and Team Patay lists is just the idea of politically-obsessed Damasos and was not the product of a consultation with Jesus. This shows that the pretension of the Catholic clergy that they know whom Jesus would vote for is the height of presumptuousness, if not a case of blasphemy.

The trouble with the Catholic clergy is they act and talk like they exclusively own Jesus when they do not even follow his teaching to give Caesar what is due Caesar and continue meddling in politics.

Catholic doctrine states that we all are sinners. Who do we vote for then !!!!! Thats the main reason why the clergy should never get involved in politics.

  • josh_alexei

Archbishop Villegas is telling his flock not endorse candidates but at the same time he is telling who not TO VOTE (the dynasty) and others that are not helping the poor and who give money and have goons should also be shunned and if that is not talking from both sides of his mouth, what else could that be? He should had simply said, ladies and gentlemen of the Church, let us mind our own business…

  • tarikan

If a religious sect waltz with politics it also dances with Judas and/or Barabbas. Let me cite some dancers with Judas/Barabbas. Foremost among them is the INC (Manalo). Then El Shaddai (Bro. Mike), JIL (Bro. Eddie), Bro. Quiboloy’s Lord (of the Ring), Bro. Eli Soriano? (no he’s not). To those who vote upon their sect leaders’ bidding, this I can say…you don’t have free will (God given virtue) and you are all IDI…OTS.

  • regd

The Archbishops reasoning is still faulty. Jesus never involved Himself in politics. He resisted when people tried to install Him as king. He never incite people to go against Rome, never entangled in a political debate, never speak out against the political affairs of that time.

He allowed people to act with their moral conviction and conscience. And even if they make poor choices (like we always do), He loved them just the same. And that is what He always does which is a complete opposite of what the religious people of our time are doing.

Jesus was an activist, a rebel. He didn’t want to subject himself to the authorities at that time which were the Roman Empire and Sanhedrin. Do these bishops know anything about biblical history? Besides, Jesus said, if you believe the bible, “Render unto Caesar things that are Caesar’s…” This basically means “DON’T MEDDLE IN STATE AFFAIRS!”

The same question was thrown to Jesus by the Parishes and now this Bishops in the Philippines is asking the same question. Did this Bishops really read the bible and follow what it meant ? or this Bishops became a Bishops because of family connections, influence, and riches?

Matthew 22:20-21 and he asked them, “whose image is this ? and who’s inscriptions?” “Ceasar’s they replied. Then he said to them, “so give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and God what is God’s.

  • Ros Feliciano

Is there really a separation between the State and the Church? The Church is
supposed to focus its activities on spiritual domain. How can the Church
justify that it is concern about pro-life when the poor people who cannot
afford to give birth in hospitals but in the streets? The government in the
opinions of millions of Christians and non-Christians is for pro-life by
assisting our women to do just right in educating them to live as human beings
do and not like animals. As we are human beings we have the right to ask our
government for supports, and it is exactly just right our government is doing.
As we believe that there is God we have the right to ask the Church for
guidance, and this is exactly just right the Church is supposed to do. Do we
rather see very young naked children clinging tightly in their mothers’ arms
sorting out whatever they can recycle to survive in garbage areas?

As for the government, there is tear in every eyes of the poorest of the poor if
indeed this RH law will not be implemented because they have no one to turn to
for support in assisting them about what to do so they will not dwell in the
    streets, make love in the streets, born in the streets, and die in the streets;
with no hope of providing education to their children and so the cycle of
living in the streets has no end.

As for the Church, there is indeed tear in every eyes of those who believe in Good
if indeed this RH law will not be implemented because everyone in the families
of the poorest of the poor will not have the opportunity to know Jesus Christ as
they don’t know how to read and write.

    Our people must not be taken for a ride into believing that the RH law is anti pro-life;
that is to say that the RH law is pro-abortion; nay, it is not at all! The
Church has schools, colleges and universities whereupon children can be
educated to know between good and evil. The facts remain, whether there is RH
law or none at all, the people are secretly or even openly doing abortions. So
the duty of the Church is to enforce an excellent education in their educational
institutions FOR ALL especially for the poor to be accepted and not to form
barriers just to accept the rich. The Church does not recognize that it has the
obligation to educate the poor children; over 90% of the students in their
schools are children of the rich people, and yet they don’t pay tax at all. What
are those who represent God on earth doing is, they enjoy to be treated with
titles and respect and living in splendor when around them are their followers
    living in filthy dwelling places.

In fact Jesus did not have a place to dwell. He did not own anything. He was
purely human and purely divine and did not have title at all. He was for the
poor and strangely enough He was against the Pharisees who were experts in
Mosaic laws, and why? In our generation we have the modern Pharisees who are
supposed to be expert in spreading the Gospels and are they?

Our men who represent God on earth don’t recognize the facts that they have the
obligation to spread the gospels to all human beings and not to get involved in
the government affairs. There must be a complete separation between the Church
    and the State.

    • Crazy_horse101010

good one wish everyone thought like you i live among the poor in the boonies and see a lot of suffering and they are just ignored. people need to go out in the real world and see what is going on.

      • Azniro Onaici

Yes there is tear in the eyes of every poorest of the poor if the RH law will not be implemented and the Chruch is ignoramus about the suffering of those who can not eat three times a day and yet our clergies are enjoying life. They are completely not following the teaching of Christ Jesus.

    • just_anotherperson

You say that there should be separation of the church and the state but at the same time would like the church to be responsible for health care and education, services that are the responsibility of the state.

      LOL.

      • Azniro Onaici

Well you should have wisdom to understand what he means. LOL

  • disqusted0fu

Even if the electorate would vote like Jesus, there are still the faulty PCOS machines that could change those votes like Judas. The Comelec had almost completely abandoned the problems of the PCOS machines and its source code that it is scary to imagine what the poll results would be.
