‘Last hurrah’ in politics for Estrada

MANILA, Philippines—In typically colorful fashion, graft-tainted former Philippine president Joseph Estrada launched his campaign for mayor of Manila Sunday in what he described as his “last hurrah” in politics.

The one-time movie actor, who turns 76 on April 19, said he wanted to end his political career as the mayor of a city where he was born and in whose sprawling slums he remains hugely popular.

“I was born in Manila, I first became a famous actor in Manila, so my career has come full circle,” Estrada told AFP in an interview before addressing thousands of supporters donning shirts in his trademark orange.

“But this is my last hurrah in politics. I just want to clean up Manila and put its affairs in order before retiring,” he said.

Estrada said his first priority was to bring urban renewal in the capital city of 1.6 million people, many of whom live in slums plagued by petty crime.

He said he also planned to fight rising criminality and end alleged corruption at city hall.

The self-confessed former womanizer and heavy drinker said he could “still jog a kilometer thrice a week” and was healthy enough for the day-to day-rigours of running one of the country’s busiest city halls.

“My public service to the people has no boundary,” he said. “The poor did not leave me and supported me all the way. I am returning the favor.”

If he won, Estrada said he would continue his programs for the poor that were halted when an uprising ousted him as president in 2001, halfway through his six-year term.

Following a marathon trial, he was convicted in 2007 of corruption for plunder and taking kickbacks worth tens of millions of dollars while president. He was however quickly pardoned by his successor Gloria Arroyo.

Estrada consistently maintained that his ousting was a conspiracy involving the influential Catholic church and the elite who feared his populist ideas.

He ran again for the presidency in 2010, coming in second behind Benigno Aquino in a field of 10 candidates — proving that he remains among the country’s most popular politicians despite his conviction.

But his return to politics could be thwarted by an equally colorful opponent, Alfredo Lim. The incumbent mayor, known as “Dirty Harry”, led a high-profile campaign to shut down Manila’s strip bars in the 1990s.

The rivalry is one of the closely watched in the May elections, when the Philippines elects candidates for more than 18,000 posts, from mayors and governors to members of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

A thousand bucks says this theiving plundering convict will stab Binay in the back in 2016 and run for president. I’m 99% sure this is gonna happen.

  • Fayha

  • kabayandinako

Medyo magkakatotoo ang kagustuhan mo. Napaaga nga lamang ng apat na taon. Your political life is ended even before the election. Siguradong sa pansitan ka pupulutin. Wala nang Manilenyong magpapa-uto sa iyo.

    • brando alejandro

Mananalo yan. Landslide!

To the voters of Manila: Before you vote for Erap, please consider his track record.
He is a convicted plunderer, recidivist womanizer/adulterer, jueting lord, he used
GSIS/SSS funds to manipulate stocks trading for his personal financial gain, habitual

drunkard & the epitome of political dynasty. It is his words against his behavior. As

we all know, “BEHAVIOR DOES NOT LIE !!!”

    • jgl414567

You are absolutely correct! This scoundrel should have been sentenced with death penalty because he plundered and committed high treason!

    • EsterPostigo

Paano yan, 2 no good ang pagpipilian???

      • Facilitator1

Korek ka kabayan. Dalawa lang kandidato–pareho pang may “EXTRA BAGGAGE”–questionable qualification to lead.

Sana maglagay ng ikatlong choice ang COMELEC na “NONE of the TWO”. Kung mas marami ang BOTO ang ikatlong CHOICE (NONE of the TWO) automatic na may FAILURE of ELECTION. And then, COMELEC is required to repeat the ELECTION but the losing (previous) candidates are disqualified to run again for the current (same) election period. Same process is repeated (again and again) until a clear WINNER is chosen by the voters.

NOTE: Magastos? OO, pero this will TRULY empower the PINOY voters to choose who will be their leader and PREVENTS non-deserving / unpopular / unqualified candidates from winning the coveted post (sometimes by DEFAULT kasi walang kalaban)!!!

This way the PEOPLE of the PHILIPPINES will have a real VOICE in choosing their leaders. PEACE…

  • BatangSingapore

  • Jane Tan

When he says clean-up Manila… does he mean trash or money?

    • jgl414567

He will clean-up the treasury of Manila empty!

    • nakawan

Ya, he’ll clean up alright! Tama na ang mga Estrada/Ejercito or whatever name you lot start calling yourselves.

  • Horst Manure

If he gets elected you deserve every thing you get and will have the best money can buy.

  • brando alejandro

Kaya hayan, what we asked for are what we are getting. Mga ‘TADO tayo! ‘NIYETA tayong lahat!

  • go88

one last round of plundering right?

  • lolo_Jose

  • calipso_2100

    Last nakaw!

  • rlo

Some people never know when to give up. Power is addictive.

  • Lakan Dupil

  • for_Prosperity

POOR WILL REMAIN POOR! SLUM WILL NEVER DISAPPEAR! Yan ang pangako ni Erap.

    • nakawan

In all his years of service, from San Juan to the presidency, may napayaman ba na mahirap si Erap?

      • nakawan

Same rule applies to any politician who claims to “help the poor.” If these politicians really want to help the poor, teach them how to manage money first. Teach them how to save money in the bank or invest in securities.

  • nes911

Never again for estrada.

  • indiosbravos2002

Erap jogs? Wahahaha. Naoperahan na to sa legs if I remember it correcty. Enough with the lies

    • penoy2012

erap loves jogs (a pair, from a woman)

  • nes911

Never again to estrada.

  • wawa2172

Well, I am not from Manila, so god bless manilenyo, you have only a choice between a plunderer and a murderer. Both Erap and Lim are already tested, both are simply bad politicians and not doer. Puro damatan na ang dalawa, so kawawang Manila, tiyak na ang pag lubog nang for capital of the Philippines. Plunderer or Murderer…na sa inyo na iyan.( Note: Lim is was responsible for the Mendiola Massacre and Luneta Hostage Crises but never convicted malakas kasi kay Cory at Noy si tsekwa.)

    • nes911

Si ersp din murderer. Remember berstain and dacer?

  • johnllander

    Huwag iboto ang magnanakaw!

    Huwag iboto ang sugarol!

    Huwag iboto ang babaero!

    Huwag iboto ang langero!

    Huwag iboto ang dating bilango!

    Huwag iboto si joseph ejercito!

  • Nitsog

  • korikong3

Last hurrah to steal. Or last hurrah to enrich himself for his retirement. pweee

  • korikong3

walang kakupas kupas itong si erap. Nasa dugo na ang pagsisinungaling. Ang botante naman di nadadala. Naniniwala pa rin.

  • Guest

“He ran again for the presidency in 2010, coming in second behind Benigno Aquino in a field of 10 candidates — proving once again how stupid the majority of Filipino voters are despite his conviction.”

  • UrHONOR

    LAST KURRAHKOT!

  • Luthmar

Ano sabi ni Erap, “last hurrah” na niya? Lokohin mo lolo mo Erap. Ang sabihin mo last hirit na sa pagkurakot so you can recover all that was seized from you when you got convicted. The nerve of this thief.

  • UrHONOR

  • $53950194

“He said he also planned to fight rising criminality and end alleged corruption at city hall.”
—wait a minute, wasnt he removed from office because of corruption?

“But this is my last hurrah in politics”
    —of course para paba-on nya.

Sa lahat ng Voters ng City of Manila, the fate of the city lies within your hands. Hwag masilaw sa mga pamigay na bigas at sardinas in lieu of your vote.

  • disqusted0fu

This man was already convicted and jailed, that should’ve been his last hurrah. After all that, he shouldn’t have been allowed to run in any position in the government. Also, the electorate have to realize to stop voting for these just popular personalities in the government. There’s been one too many of them, including the President himself.
