OUT of the total 200 college scholarship slots available nationwide, the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has allotted 38 slots this year for Visayas applicants.

Of the 200 slots for the school year 2013 to 2014, 41 are available for the National Capital Region applicants, 76 for Luzon, 38 for the Visayas , and 45 for Mindanao.

The program provides an opportunity for state workers to send their children to colleges and universities.

Previously, the mode of choosing scholars was done through an electronic raffle.

Under the new guidelines, the nominee of a parent-member who has the lowest annual basic salary will be given priority in the scholarship grant.

The distribution of the scholarship slots per region will be proportionate to the number of GSIS members in each region.

GSIS Negros Oriental branch manager Mercedes Enriquez said the nominee must be a child of the member and an incoming freshman accepted in schools accredited by the Commission on Higher Education.

The list of schools is found on the GSIS website www.gsis.gov.ph

Enriquez said the scholar of the program will be entitled to the actual cost of tuition and miscellaneous fees not exceeding P20,000 and a monthly stipend of P2,000.
