Noynoy sleeps while mice play

It’s unbelievable that  Mike Arroyo, husband of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo,  is in Hong Kong for treatment of an illness.

St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City saved him from certain death when he had a heart attack and aneurysm several years ago.

Why should he go to Hong Kong for the treatment of an unspecified illness when he could always go to the hospital where he had  surgery for a condition that only 1 percent—repeat 1 percent—of patients would survive?

He and his lawyers are lying that Arroyo is in Hong Kong for a medical reason.

FEATURED STORIES

Mike Arroyo is trying to get away from a Senate investigation into the purchase by the Philippine National Police of pre-owned helicopters that were passed off as brand new.

Arroyo has been pointed to as the owner of the helicopters.

I hope I’m wrong, but there’s a slim chance Arroyo is coming back to the country to face the Senate probe.

I talked to a source close to the Arroyos. This source told me that the Arroyos bought a villa in Portugal near the Spain-Portugal border.

Since the country doesn’t have an extradition treaty with Portugal, any one of the Arroyos facing criminal charges in the country can’t be repatriated.

The issues of the overpriced rubber boats and outboard motors and the “ghost” P300-million repair of V-150 personnel carriers that were raised in this column recently were the subject of a “good laugh” by some officials of the National Police Commission (Napolcom), according to an insider.

The officials said so long as Sen. Ping Lacson didn’t raise those issues on the Senate floor—as in the case of the police helicopters—they would not be investigated by Malacañang.

I mourn the passing away of the Grand Old Man of Davao City, Luis “Luigi” T. Santos.

Luigi Santos, 87, was Davao City’s former chief of police, former mayor, congressman and secretary of interior and local government.

A guerrilla leader during World War II, Santos led a very colorful life.

In the early days of Marcos’ martial law regime, Santos was detained.

Brought to Malacañang to have an audience with President Marcos, he was asked to pledge allegiance to the strongman.

In front of other people, Santos reportedly told Marcos: “My allegiance is to God and my country. I will never kneel before any man even if it means my continued detention.”

While trying to enforce a warrant of arrest for then Cagayan Gov. Rodolfo Aguinaldo in Tuguegarao, then Local Government Secretary Santos was cornered by the governor’s men.

Santos and his bodyguards made a stand at Hotel Delfino where he exchanged shots with Aguinaldo’s followers with his old caliber .30-06 bolt action rifle.

Praised by Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile for his bravery, Santos replied: “I was scared, but I was too ashamed to run.”

This man of courage was a henpecked husband.

His jealous wife once shot him  but missed, and  Luigi ran  away.
