Vegetable vendor gunned down in Quezon City

By

MANILA, Philippines—A woman helping tend a vegetable stand in a Quezon City neighborhood was gunned down by motorcycle-riding men Friday night while a male vendor near her was wounded in the arm and leg, police said.

Vegetable vendor Eunice Erestain, 42, died while being treated for several gunshot wounds she suffered in the attack, which occurred at 8:35 p.m. in Barangay Nova Proper.

Investigator PO2 Hermogenes Capili said the incident happened in front of the Del Mundo Building on Buenamar Street, where the woman also lived.

Another vegetable vendor, Ren Baldes, 20, was hit by stray bullets, sustaining wounds on the left arm and right leg.

According to Erestain’s sister, Christina, her sister dropped by her vegetable stand Friday night to help.

Two men arrived on a motorcycle and one of them alighted and walked toward the victim. The man then fired several shots, hitting Erestain and Baldes, who was manning another vegetable stall, Christina said.

The victim was rushed to the Novaliches General Hospital where she died.

Police reported the victim’s family as saying they could not think of any reason why anybody would want her dead.
