China pope reaction reflects tensions with Vatican

BEIJING—Beijing on Monday called for Pope Benedict XVI’s successor not to interfere in China’s internal affairs, highlighting enduring tensions with the Vatican after the pontiff’s surprise resignation.

Asked about the pope’s decision to step down, which stunned the world when it was announced last Monday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the Vatican “should not interfere in China’s internal affairs”.

The phrase is often a reference to perceived challenges to the authority of the ruling Communist Party, and China and the Vatican have clashed over issues including the ordination of priests and who should be the final arbiter of church affairs.

Hong said he hoped the next pope would “create conditions for the improvement of bilateral relations” with China, but indicated that Beijing would not allow a thaw in relations without concessions from the Vatican.

China does not have diplomatic relations with the Holy See, and only permits worship in its state-run Catholic Church, which has 5.7 million members and does not recognize the ultimate authority of the pope.

Other Chinese Catholics, estimated at between three and six million, worship in underground churches which proclaim loyalty to the Vatican above the Chinese state.

Hong also called on the Vatican to break off diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory.

China and the Vatican severed diplomatic ties in 1951 after the latter recognized the Nationalist Chinese government in Taipei, a rival to the communist regime in Beijing.

    China is in the best position to reject the papacy. The Vatican is nothing but a state’s headed by a person trying to usurp the authority of the true God. While Vatican will burn indue time China’s economy will proliferate and will be blessed by the true God. In the end China will win. Blessed be China!

    No wonder, kaya si PNoy at mga kaanib niya ay kritikal at binabastpos ang RCC , as shown by their posts here, lalo na ng kainitan ng RH bill. Yang mga yellowtsekwas “don’t recognize the authority of the RCC.” Get it now? Palabas lang yang kanilang pagka Katoliko daw.

  • w33k3nd3r

    Jeez gadz wtf is wrong with this politburo?! What is PRANING man?!?!

  • speaksoftlylove

    China’s fear is obvious. With the Vatican faction who are planning to leave the unorthodox dogma to cope up with the change of times, winning the power struggle inside the Vatican, China fears that more and more communists would be converted and will embrace the new teachings of the RCC. That’s the bottom line.

    That is why many Vatican insiders believe that Cardinal Tagle has a good chance of being elevated to the papacy since the Philippines is strategic and has an ongoing spat with China. Don’t you ever forget that Vatican is not all about religion. It is also a political religious entity and it has more than 80 ambassadors worldwide, unique in itself as compared to other religions.

    Has anyone ever pondered the very strange coincidences that is happening before our very eyes? First, the US Defense program has shifted their focus to the Far East and their decision came on the heels that China and Philippines has renewed their territory dispute? Second, Tagle was appointed Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI, only months after the canonization of the last Philippine saint? Finally, the “renunciation” of Pope Benedict’s throne? No wonder China are feeling disturbed of the succession of coincidences.

  • speaksoftlylove

    Cardinal Tagle, humble of admitting that he is just “novato” as he is may not be aware of the great responsibility that lies ahead before him, not only amongst his own people, but the world community as a whole. Whether he will be elected the next Pope or not, I have a gut feeling that he will play a very important rule on what lies ahead of the globe.

    Lest we forget, it is only in the Philippine territory that the elements of power comes into play as of this moment hence, the Philippines is now “really strategic” and these elements of power are:

    1. Military   – owing to the shift of the US Defense Program in the Far East;
    2. Finance  – owing to the vast natural deposit specially oil deposits;
    3. Political  – spread of democracy specially to communist people; and
    4. Spiritual  – spread of Christianity to the non believers of God specially to the communist country like China.

    Behold, the Revelation.

      Ilalabas ang katutuhanan na ang Romano Katolik reheleyon ay taguan ng mga bayuts at pervertos nagdadamit ng anghel daw pero mga hudas pala. Ang simbahang katoliko ay remnants of the Roman Empire where they love to see big bodied men fight lions and tigers in the Coliseum while holding hands with fellow pervertos. Pagkatapos pupunta sila sa Bath House and mag chuchupa at magjajakul sa kanilang mga boytoys.

  • $18209031

    To all kayumangmangs, you are slaves to this false religion called the Romano Katoliko Faith . This is the religion that carried out socalled Spanish Inquisition to kill christians and innocents alike in the middle ages. It had blood on its hands for centuries. It connived with Hitler in WW2. Catholic priests molested children since time in memorial. How lives have to be affected and Vatican keeps covering them up ? This is a religion wrapped in piousity, satanism,  paganism and animism in one accord.

    Gawang Romani ito noon pa para to become one mammoth religion for their entire Roman Empire stretching from Western Europe ,  Mediterranean north Africa , parts of Middle East to Central part of Asia.  They tried to merge all sorts of tricks to entice the populace into this false religion. The truth is, this is the religion of the devil made for the devil reincarnate. Kawawa kayo mga kayumangmangs. This is a curse to your souls thus saith the Lord in Heaven.

    • mynnyx

  • virgoyap

    Perhaps an Asian Pope will help to resolve this problem.

  • jgl414567

    The communist leaders of China as always are bullies with there newfound prosperity courtesy of the consumers around the world. It is time these corrupt leaders are taught a lesson and overthrown so that democracy will flourish in China and its people freed from political oppression.

  • jgl414567

    Communism has been proven to be a failed ideology even its current economic progress was driven by capitalist economy!!
