US cardinal says didn’t know how to deal with sex abuse

LOS ANGELES—A US Catholic cardinal stripped of his duties said Friday he didn’t know how to handle sex abuse claims, as he had not learned about it at college—drawing withering criticism from victims.

Retired Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony wrote on his blog that he was not taught about child sexual abuse, a day after was relieved of all administrative and public duties” by the current archbishop of LA.

On Thursday the LA archdiocese also released files on more than 100 clerics, as required under a 2007 lawsuit deal over alleged sex abuse.

“Nothing in my own background or education equipped me to deal with this grave problem,” Mahony wrote, in an open letter to LA Archbishop Jose Gomez, who succeeded Mahony in 2011.

“In two years (1962-1964) spent in graduate school earning a Masters Degree in Social Work, no textbook and no lecture ever referred to the sexual abuse of children,” he said.

“While there was some information dealing with child neglect, sexual abuse was never discussed.”

But the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) immediately dismissed the letter.

“Vindictive victims, greedy lawyers, salacious reporters, inept therapists, unfair laws—these are among the many targets of (Mahony’s) favorite hobby, blaming others for (the) ongoing clergy sex crimes and cover up.

“Today, he’s added another culprit: his allegedly poor education.

“This may well be Mahony’s wildest claim yet. Even grade school drop outs know that laws prohibit child sex crimes and that when we know about or suspect child sex crimes, we are supposed to call the police. Period.

“When Mahony was in school, there was probably no mention of gang rape or identity theft or child porn either. So because Mahony took no course in these crimes, it’s OK if he enables and conceals them?”

On Thursday, Archbishop Gomez announced the measures against Mahony, and that Mahony’s former top adviser on sex-abuse issues, Thomas Curry, had stepped down as a regional bishop.

The archdiocese reached a $660 million settlement with about 500 alleged victims in 2007. As part of that deal, the archdiocese agreed to release the personnel files of clergy accused of abuse.

“A US Catholic cardinal stripped of his duties said Friday he didn’t know
how to handle sex abuse claims, as he had not learned about it at

Not quite unusual. Here in the PHL many of them might still believe that it’s the sun that revolves around the earth, and that we are still living in the middle ages.

    • Noel

Many priests may even believe that anal causes pregnancy too but they still keep doing it.

    • levis2012

These guilty Roman Catholic priests must be jailed!

  • Islaslolo

He must have learned sex education from his fellow priests. Or his school did not teach sex education when he was taking his master’s.

    • RyanE

Definitely, same in the PHL the church opposes teaching of sex education in schools.

      • Noel

Exactly.  If priests are not taught sex in school, then what authority do they have to teach family values and oppose RH Bill ?

  • virgoyap

Ha ha ha it was just the same experience with those victimized by typhoon Pablo. The Cardinal Mahony have no experience whatsoever on how to handle with such case. He have no previous knowledge about it. But is this excusable?

  • tarikan

Oh really? With all due respect Mr. Mahony, how did you become a cardinal with an intellect like that? Should I laugh or should I cry?

  • Noel

The Cardinal does not know how to handle sex abuse because he did not learn it in school?  Ha, ha, ha.

  • RyanE

I guess Cardinal Roger Mahony is at the same league with our very own Bishop Garcera, both are clueless of what they are saying.

    • Crazy_horse101010

its no different then vidal saying anyone with dual citizenship is a poor citizen when 90 percent of the people living in the vatican have dual citizenship including the popes

  • Brahman

Kaponin na mga paring yan na nangrirape ng mga bata, lalo na yong mga pedophile na gusto mga batang lalaki.

I cannot help but think that if a scientific study/survey of the sexual abuses commited by men of the cloth is undertaken vis-a-vis their own belief/adherence to the Catholic dogma that it has the power here on earth to forgive “sins,” a belief, both self-serving and arbitrary,  that stems from Matthew 18:18—-“Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven”—- a significant correlation can be most likely shown.

But it only takes common sense to see that celibacy and the sexual ethics taught by the Church are fundamentally flawed and clashes with the known nature of man as a social being.  Just imagine a belief system that teaches that “the Church is the bride of Christ.”  Utter nonsense and mumbo-jumbo.  And, look at the results.  The extra-marital affairs of priests go way beyond what society considers as normal heterosexual behavior.

Does it have to be taught in school, any school, that sex
abuse on anyone, children, adult, man or woman is wrong and despicable? Retired
Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony is full of sickening excuses. I wonder if he
did the same thing. And he believes that there is God? Shame on these
    pretenders and hypocrites!

Psalms:92:6: A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this.

Napaka simple!!!

  • disqus_EWrSdjV1nv

this should be taught in pre school, elementary and high school and colleges.

the priests need to nail someone regularly whether they are married or not.

cardinal sin nailed more than 100 women.

  • Crazy_horse101010

in the american news 12000 pages of documents were released involving 196 priests and bishops in southern california

  • GlenMJacob

Does the Philippine bishops studied marriage, sex, reproduction, divorse, politics, child rearing ?etc.. Just asking because they are good on dipping their noses on this issues. To borrow the signature word of txtman pitiful…

  • Olibo

Connivance and cover-ups are common in any organized gang of thieves. These predators are syndicated perverts and paedophiles disguising as disciples of Christ. Solution: Priests should be castrated and undergo sexual preferential test to stop these sexual abuses.Legalize gay priesthood by requiring them to wear PINK robe and ribbon in their heads to warn the kids.

  • Ari Putan

Yes, he is ignorant about sex…
He wears bestida instead of pants..maybe he wears bra..
    He uses anus for sex..
He is called father even without children..
Pretending to know about worship, love and service…HYPOCRITES…

  • dickenhead

this stupid priest argument is hilarious if not scary. Mothers don’t  let your child go near a priests or a  bishops

  • George Lapulapu

can’t blame this cardinal.. he probably did not expect the rampant and widespread sex abuse of priest and the systematic cover up.

bottom line–NO you know how to handle it all along–report to the police, and let your priest serve time. were also part of the widespread cover up that was discovered recently–THUS— you feign stup1dity….

    • Crazy_horse101010

why is it the catholics always attack the whistle blowers. ive seen people in some of these forums write when a child raping case is revealed. start crying and say we have to pray for the priests. to hell with the priest. what about the victims who lives are destroyed. many of these victims commit suicide especially in europe because of the shame.what if was your kid

      • Crazy_horse101010

sorry george i didnt mean your kid i was talking about others who only care about the priests. i get upset whenever this happens maybe because i lived in california, and it makes me sick to my stomach when people protect the baby rapers

      • George Lapulapu prayer is for the RC to get out of this cleansed and regain their moral ground..

however, i did not see RM actually repenting for the sex scandals sins. pinagtatakpan pa. how can RC move forward and be cleansed.

..and i think RC who see comment about sex abuse/scandal of priests should stop defending the obvious and instead demand for cleeansing of the church… becuase it is unfair to the rest of roman catholic to be tainted with this scandal… di naman nila kasalanan…

..well meaning roman catholics should demand justice and cleansing form their ranks.. otherwise, they will suffer the same condemnation from the sins committed by their priests…

  • just_anotherperson

This cardinal and his assistant Bishop Curry should face the full legal consequences of their actions.

The justice in this case is that people who wanted to bring down the Catholic Church brought down one of their own.

  • geminimind

He was blind during the sex abuse claims and now he see after being kick-out.They do everything they can to cover up all the crimes but once caught innocence is always on their mind.

  • joshua kings

cardinal mahoney is also a victim here; he had admitted that he made mistakes and made amends by way of a multi-million compensation deal with the victims…
he didn’t want what happened, what his ‘sons’ did to the flock…but as the ‘father’ of the archdiocese, he faced the command responsibility that was placed on his shoulders….unfortunately, he did not know THEN how to deal with these enormous problems that his ‘sons’ committed; thus, the mistakes….
    c. mahoney had apologized, did mea culpa, not only once, and he too like the church and we the laity are still suffering from these grievous acts of these wayward shepherds of the church.
his being removed from office by bishop gomez, his successor, is another fresh blow to him…
bishop gomez’ releasing all the files to the public is a good move towards total and permanent cleansing and healing of the church…
we the laity should be more circumspect and forgiving especially to him.
let’s move on as we all feel the pain inflicted to us, to our dear church.
    i cry for our church.
let’s pray for our church and her shepherds.

    • Jane Tan

uh he admitted nothing, he blamed the education system

  • amapangarap

LOL..bakit silent na naman yung mga fanatics dyan? Yung news about Celdran mga nanggagalaiti, halos gusto na ipabitay.

    oh teh hypocrisy

  • amapangarap

It has become a common thing with priests that they no longer see anything wrong with child abuse..

  • Crazy_horse101010

this pope when he was the head of the immorals committee and the last pope knew about protected and covered up for hundreds of child raping priests. they moved around so they could do the same in other churches. they came out in public and admitted and asked for foregiveness. no one ever demoted them or condemned them. in fact one is up for sainthood, at least mahoney did something besides sweeping it under the rug. as someone from california i can forgive him

    • levis2012

       God will condemn them!

Mahoney is talking baloney. Does one have to go to school to learn that when one sees a crime being committed one has to report it to the police?

Mahoney is a bad actor. Good try, though.

  • akimaxx

Equal Justice system  must also happen in the Philippines. An ordinary Juan de la Cruz can be convicted of sex-related crimes and suffer in jail. A pedophile priest is as slippy as an eel. Cover-up and fully protected by the church.

Sobra na ang pakiki-alam at ‘power’ ng CBCP.

  • Eagle from Davao

a poor alibi for an intelligent person, the reason he did not know how to handle or shall we say he can’t handle the sex abuse issue for his is also one of them.

  • riza888

Disgusting men protecting each other, not in the name of God, in the name of power.

  • Jane Tan

We aren’t taught how to use guns in school, doesn’t really add-up to the number of gun killings.

  • just_anotherperson

No excuses.  The cardinal should face all charges.

    • mxsclxmxn

      He should face them!

However, whatever others say here against the RCC will not make their religion true! PEKE pa rin yan!

Dahil itong mga priest pedo at rapists, in short sex fiends, are so used to their disgusting sexual behavior, manhid na sila. They think yong sexual perversion nila ay normal yan.
