US jet missing off Italian coast

ROME—A US air force F-16 fighter jet based in northern Italy went missing over the Adriatic Monday after the pilot reported a problem in his last radio communication, the Italian news agency Ansa reported.

The aircraft was flying in formation with other jets when radio contact with its base in Aviano was lost, the agency said, adding it was feared lost at sea.

The pilot had reported a problem in his last radio contact at 1900 GMT, Ansa reported, quoting airport sources.

The other aircraft that were flying in formation with the missing jet were involved in the search, as were the Italian coast guard.
