Comelec disqualifies 63 nuisance candidates

By

MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has disqualified 63 nuisance candidates and 10 ineligible candidates running for the 2013 national and local elections.

Comelec defines nusiance candidates as those who “(1) put the election process in mockery or disrepute, (2) causes confusion among the voters by the similarity of the names of the registered candidates, (3) have no bona fide intention to run for the office.”

The ineligible candidates were declared as such “due to their failure to meet the age requirement [or because they were not] a registered voter,” Comelec said in their resolution promulgated January 11.

In the list of disqualified candidates, five were running for a seat in the House of Representatives, seven were running as governors in their respective provinces, and 24 were running as mayor in their locality.

The certificates of candidacies of all 73 have been cancelled and their names removed from the Candidates’ Profile System and the Certified List of Candidates for the May 13, 2013 Elections, Comelec said.
