NFA appointment bared

A Malacañang official, who said he was not authorized to announce the appointment, disclosed to the Philippine Daily Inquirer that Orlan Agbin Calayag would soon be named the new administrator of the National Food Authority (NFA).

“His (appointment) papers are being readied now,” said the Palace official.

Calatag was the chief of staff of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala when the latter was a congressman.

Earlier, a report began making the rounds that President Aquino had named Customs Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence and Investigation Danilo Lim as the new NFA chief in place of Lito Banayo who resigned late last year to prepare for his Congress bid in May.

But Malacañang appeared not to know anything about it.

When asked to confirm the report, Palace officials refused to comment on the matter.

Retired Gen. Danny Lim will be more effective with the Bureau of Customs, where he can apply his knowledge in intelligence-gathering skills against big time smugglers, rather than hole his up inside the NFA. When BOC chief Biazon gets out of the bureau, then Danny Lim can take his place. In this way, corrupt customs employees who connive with smugglers will have a hard time to succeed in their shady deals.
