MANILA, Philippines—Newly appointed Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle on Sunday ushered in the start of the dawn masses or “Simbang Gabi” and called on the people to remember Jesus Christ as the reason for the celebrations.

He said that people’s minds are usually on many other things during the Christmas season such as their salary bonus, vacation and shopping.

But Tagle said in his homily at the San Fernando De Dilao Parish that “the true reason why we should be joyful is because Jesus is with us.”

“God knows our suffering and our confusion, that is why He gave His son Jesus to bring peace to our hearts,” he said.

“He will give people deep joy and happiness that cannot be brought by the material world,” he added.

Tagle reminded people that they also have a responsibility to help others who are in need.

“Give clothes to those without, give food to those who are hungry, and give happiness,” he said.

During this Christmas season he also urged people to be honest and to give instead of receiving.

He cited as an example the children who come to visit their relatives only to ask for gifts.

“Don’t ask for more than what is appropriate … True joy is in being honest and not taking advantage [of others],” Tagle said.

The mass was covered live by INQUIRER.net through livestream. All subsequent dawn masses will also be streamed live.

“He cited as an example the children who come to visit their relatives only to ask for gifts….”

…Cardinal Tagle…how dare you to be so judgmental of people’s intent…you should try to speak for yourself…who gave you license to ridicule the tradition…???
…granted what you said is true…it’s not your BUSINESS!
…did any of your relatives ask you of anything???
    …well…talk to them in private…not in PUBLIC…!
…your words are so pretentious, preachy…HOW DARE YOU?
…i am totally appalled…keep your moralistic opinion to yourself…

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OHOD5EA75DBBUH53UKLRXRK764 Mang Teban

      The cardinal was being
truthful about some Filipinos who teach their children to go to their ninongs and
ninangs for gifts instead of waiting for the godparents to come to their children. The spirit of gift-giving has been lost by the bad practice to beg. This has become the “tradition” which is not the original custom before when godparents visit their godchildren and not the other way around. Thus, this has resulted to what is depicted also as those godparents hiding from their
      godchildren in Filipino humor.

      Nothing to be judgmental
about something which is true..Are you hurt by the reality that this is bad
attitude that some of us teach our children to assume that godparents have the obligation to give gifts in all gift-giving occasions of the year?

Priests, pastors, imans, ministers, and preachers of different faiths give homilies or speeches to
provide direction on moral issues..Why pick on Catholic clergy?

      • Alajero

….mang teban … all my conscious life as a child…i pass by my ninong to “mano” and it becomes a tradition that i get “aguinado” for doing that…with all due respect…i did not remember the ninong visiting the inaanak…it’s always like that…out of curiosity…when did the tradition of ninong visiting inaanak stop? …. i cannot imagine pacquiao visiting all who call him “ninong”…it’s just not going to happen…
…being preachy and openly criticizing parishioner while they are going to mass is judgmental and pretentious stereotyping..IN A CIVILIZE CIVIL SOCIETY..it should STOP!!!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OHOD5EA75DBBUH53UKLRXRK764 Mang Teban

your parents must have made you believe that it was like that. But, in my case, my godparents came to visit our family on certain occasions not usually on Christmas and not always do they bring gifts for me.
But, my parents told us, their children, that it is better to give than to receive. Our ninongs and ninangs were mostly our parents’ siblings as well which made it easier for us to understand how we should conduct ourselves as godchildren. Hence, I did the same for my children.

A preacher has to bring a point as clearly as he can. People who go to mass must expect the same. A preacher speaks for God. Jesus spoke harsh words to those he directed his anger – “serpents”, “vipers”, “hypocrites”, etc – and even to Peter who tried to ask Jesus not to go on with his plan to suffer in the hands of his enemies, Jesus replied to Peter – “Get behind me, Satan.” to mean that Peter was not speaking on his own but was being misled by the Devil to make Jesus change his mind.
I actually dislike priests who give cryptic messages instead of speaking with clear message about the Word of God. But that does not make me change my religion. My faith is in God as his works perfect his words. In imitation of Jesus, we, too, must put work in our words. So, a Catholic who merely behaves as a spectator has his faith empty as he delivers lip service to God because he has no good works to back up his words.

If you don’t like to be preached, live in a cave or alone in an island where no one will preach to you. Do you think that you will find happiness that way?

      • Alajero

…mang teban..you must have a low self esteem…to accept criticism or ridicule from someone who barely know you..they have no place from where I am now…
…you guys need to demand more respect even from teachers or preachers …that is all i am saying…

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OHOD5EA75DBBUH53UKLRXRK764 Mang Teban

No, Alajero, you brought the matter to yourself as you expressed in exaggeration the cardinal’s act as “being preachy…openly criticizing parishioners…judgmental and pretentious stereotyping in a civilize (d) society..it should stop.” Wow..now who is onion-skinned between the two o us?…Wow, now who needs to have respect “even from teachers or preachers”? Did you have respect for Cardinal Tagle? It didn’t look that way from the way you wrote your comments. The cardinal was doing the usual homily that any priest or bishop would have said the same things and there is nothing to get excited with the cardinal. He is a simple man with simple but direct words to his listeners. With a preconceived bias, every facet of the speaker will surely be criticized as you did.

      • Alajero

…just because i disagree with Cardnal Tagle..it does not mean I don’t respect him…i am pointing at the stereotyping and attempt to stigmatize a tradition that we all grow up enjoying….a friendly reminder is different from ridicule and contempt the cardinal feels about the tradition…

But Jesus was born in the early spring, not on 25th December. It was the lambing season, ‘while shepherds watched their flocks at night’, his first gift being a lamb (the lamb of god). So, why are we celebrating his birth in late December?
A prize for the best answer!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WC2VPZRJETRO5KOU4VOZCJXEDY Tamarindwalk

I think we’re all getting tired of the Catholic church and its outdated teachings.

      • happylada

Thats why there was a Protestant reformation

    • Make_Progress

Here is from Jesus Christ Our Promised Seed by Victor Paul Wierwille:

“In 274 A.D., the Romans designated December 25 as the birthday of the unconquered sun, being the time when the sun begins noticeably to show an increase in light, resulting in longer daylight hours. By 336 A.D., the church in Rome was adapting this festival, spiritualizing its significance as a reference to Jesus Christ and calling it the ‘Feast of the Nativity of the Sun of Righteousness.’ Attempting to Christianize and incorporate the pagan traditions of antiquity, the church in Rome adopted this midwinter holiday celebrating the birth of the sun god as one of its own observances, somewhat changing its significance, but retaining many customs of the pagan festival. As the Roman church spread its influence religiously and militarily, this holiday of December 25 became the most popular date in Christendom to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. A special mass was established for Christ, hence, the name, ‘Christmass,’ abbreviated ‘Christmas.’”

      • Alajero

…thanks make_progress that’s informative….this is a smart way of substituting the Christian religion over the pagan ritual…which is not a bad thing at all…the fruit of all of these is the emergence of the Roman Catholic church…that is US!
Let us keep on celebrating Christmas…as an annual awareness of who we are and where we came from…MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU…CHEERS!!!

      • happylada

But I think its important that we celebrate it at some point – after all the birth of Christ is the central point in Western history. Can you suggest a better date? It seems that almost every date already has some significance. The fact that it is timed to the beginning of the beginning of a new year cycle is important symbolically.

Does it matter which month Christmas is celebrated? What matters is you celebrate the coming of the Lord..unless you are into precision of chronology (“kronos”) rather than the presence of God (“kairus”). Even your presumption of early spring birth of Jesus is not founded on any substance of proof. The Catholic Church set the date on her own based on discussions by the early fathers of the Church. So, why follow the Catholic’s marking of the infant Jesus’ birth as December 25th? Celebrate your own Christmas, dumb dumb..

“Killjoy Pope crushes Christmas nativity traditions: New Jesus book reveals there were no donkeys beside crib, no lowing oxen and definitely no carols”

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OHOD5EA75DBBUH53UKLRXRK764 Mang Teban

walang kadala-dala itong si brunogiordano na ang alyas niya ay mula sa grupong kontra-Katoliko talaga..
At least with the Catholic Church, every previous error in history or a shadow of doubt appears on what was previously accepted as the fact is always corrected. The Pope intended to correct the wrong impression that the Nativity scene was a merry mix-up of shepherds, the Magi, and farm animals. Since nobody was around at the time Jesus was born in Bethlehem, artists commissioned by the Catholic Church started to make images to depict what could have happened then. But, of course, the first prints were copied and enhanced and added with more background which the present pope said there was a need to set everything in its proper perspective.
So, please do not get the wrong idea that the pope is a killjoy.

I know your intention is to destroy anything Catholic to weaken the Church and its institutions. Sorry, you failed again, brunogiordano.

    • happylada

Its interesting that they decide to rewrite the story NOW, 2000 years later. Did they find some long-lived eye-witnesses? There certainly WERE carols, sung by the angels. The High Priest of Bethlehem used the supernatural appearance of singing angels as his justification for not stoning Mary to death for her illegitimate birth, as was required by Jewish law.. He cited Isaiah – that a virgin would conceive – as scriptural precedent, and the singing angels as the current extraordinary evidence that this WAS the Messiah!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Abdul-Rashid/100004367910013 Abdul Rashid

Nice smile Tagle. You should stop selling Jesus on christmas. Jesus did not ever say we should celebrate His birthday but His death. His death on the cross was the greatest sacrifice ever made and that liberated us from all evil. Tagle, you must rid yourself and your church with hypocrisies and start preaching the true salvation. The blood of Christ covers us from all sin.

Do not eat the food on the table on Christmas. Fast if you must if that makes you happy. Do not buy any gift for anybody on Christmas and neither accept gifts from others this season. No one told you..or did you hear a mysterious voice whisper in your ear – Christmas is disgusting?

san ka galing na sanga ng protestant?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OHOD5EA75DBBUH53UKLRXRK764 Mang Teban

I have to correct you, Abdul Rashid. Jesus needs to be “sold” on Christmas because Jesus is now relegated in the background and for those who attempt to make merry their Christmas, remove Jesus altogether from the season.

Even a lot of Catholics have lost touch on what should be the center of the celebration. A lot of Catholics do not focus on the Nativity of the Son of God but follow other religions who preach selectively yet claim to read the Holy Bible. So, other faiths claim that Jesus’ birth is unimportant as if anyone of us can divide Jesus’ life into – not important, fairly important, and very important. Fool, Jesus did not come in this world to be recognized only as the person who died on the Cross. Jesus’ conception into the womb of his mother Mary was already the message of the Father to us that he was fulfilling his promise to save us through his sending of his own begotten Son. The annunciation to Mary was also a fulfillment of the prophecies made in the Old Testament that a virgin mother was to give birth to the Savior. So from the prophecies before the immaculate conception of Mary to the birth of Jesus, our God was already speaking to us of his great love to save us from evil. The ministry of Jesus as an adult to his passion, death, and resurrection was the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to his disciples that he should die so that many will be saved. And afterwards, Jesus ascended into heaven and told his disciples of the coming of his Spirit to be our advocate until his Second Coming – the general judgment of mankind. So, Abdul Rashid. God in Jesus’ birth, ministry, passion, death, resurrection, ascension and coming on the final days is the entire salvation history. Not on Holy Week only, sir. No, it ain’t.

There is a need really to “sell” Jesus as this month of December generally remembered as the birth month of Jesus has been timed to be the “historic moment” for lovers of contraception in the voting for the RH bill. Many Filipino Catholics have been duped to believe that the birth of baby Jesus is not that important. Sad but true.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GIKO22WTOLKOOKB6V2G4YPJX4Y Babsy

december  was chosen as christmas month because that’s the time roman winter festivals were celebrated. read about the church’s history. knowledge is power.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OHOD5EA75DBBUH53UKLRXRK764 Mang Teban

Knowledge is power..but folly comes with lack of wisdom.
Was it wiser for you to accept the insinuation that Catholics chose December as the birth month of Jesus out of whim? Or, was it foolish for you to remain beholden to some rumor and yet celebrate Christmas in December like you are a genuine Christian? Go ahead and celebrate by your lonesome self with those self-appointed knowledgeable bunch in another month other than December.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VPSXDLCQEZGZDJSX32G7PYHNCI Noel

Don’t mix Jesus, Christmas to the RH Bill.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OHOD5EA75DBBUH53UKLRXRK764 Mang Teban

Noel, Noel, the angel did say….Jesus is the Father’s only begotten Son. Did you think that it was s t u p i d   for Cardinal Chito Tagle to be talking about Jesus as the reason for this Christmas season when it is true that the baby in the manger was Jesus?
Why should that not coincide with the RH bill?
The contraception legislators and our president think that the RH bill must pass into Congress before Christmas. Thus, it was the RH bill brouhaha that is getting into the sacred celebration of Christmas, the birth of our Savior…well, unless you also think that the RH is your “Savior” ..the one that will rescue the poor from hunger and poverty?

Though I’m not a Catholic, I’m against this “measure”. True believers uphold Christian morals. And as Christians, we do and practice the moral standards more than we can say and preach.

Christmas customs originate not from the Bible, but from pagan antiquity. Jesus declared: “And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men” (Mark 7:7).

December 25 a Mithraic feast termed natalis invicti solis, or birthday of the unconquered Sun” (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th ed., article: Christmas

Biblical evidence of timing, such as the the shepherds and their flocks in the fields, disproves the notion that Christ was born in mid-winter (Clarke’s Commentary, Adam Clarke, Vol. V, p. 370). In fact after mid September, Him being six months younger than John the Baptist.

“In 1644 the English puritans forbade any merriment or religious services [on Christmas] by act of Parliament, on the ground that it was a heathen festival” (article: “Christmas”). When King Charles II restored the monarchy, this ban was lifted. The ban remained in many of North America’s early settlement. Not until the 1840s was Christmas accepted as a legal holiday in Massachusetts.

Many children in Western countries have little or no concept of God, but do have a clear concept of Santa Claus. Santa Claus “sees all and knows all.”

Christmas obscures Jesus Christ’s true plan of salvation, and substitutes empty myths and fables in its place. But God’s Holy Days—which offer true hope and will bring ultimate peace to all of humanity—reveal His true plan of salvation.

So, instead of seeking to put Christ back into Christmas, we must acknowledge that He was never there in the first place! Christmas never was Christian! True Christians will give it back to the pagans, to whom it has belonged all along! Instead of borrowing from the world around us, we ought to take our religious customs and practices directly from the Bible. Then we will be worshiping our Creator in spirit and truth, just as He teaches us to do (John 4:24).

Let us hope that Cardinal Tagle will start preaching the Gospel that Jesus Christ preached, The Gospel of the Kingdom of God. (Mark1 14:15)

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, (Col 3:23)

Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers, (3 John 1:5)

I salute Mang Teban, a learned Catholic. This blog site needs Catholics like you. Thank you!

Christmas is a celebration of faith not of history.  While we can discuss historical accounts in proper perspective, historicity does not assure us of facts free from any biases or prejudices.  History is there to help and not to condemn.

Now, for those who are criticizing Catholics for Christmas celebration as not historical, what is your motive?  What can you get from it?  Is it just for the sake of criticizing or of hatred or of being disgruntled?

For us, Christmas unites families, Christmas brings joy to families, Christmas reminds people about God’s favor and goodness and many other good things happen in Christmas especially to people who celebrate it faithfully and not just for a show.

Now, what do you become with your criticism?  Maybe just bitter!

YOU CAN ALL CRITICIZE, SPEAK YOU MIND & COMMENT AS YOU WISH, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOUR VERY OWN PERSONAL LIFE & WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR OWN FAMILY BEHIND CLOSED DOORS WILL DEFINE WHO YOU REALLY ARE! AT THE END OF YOUR LIFE, YOUR COMMENTS HERE MEAN NOTHING & WHAT YOU STAND FOR……YOU WILL BE JUDGED BY CHRIST JESUS BASED ON THE ” REAL TRUTH”!!
