Gov’t hit for allegedly failing to give justice to Luisita victims

MANILA, Philippines — The government has failed in giving justice to victims of the violent dispersal of protesting farmers eight years ago at Hacienda Luisita, a sugar plantation in Tarlac owned by the family of President Benigno Aquino III, a leftist umbrella group said Friday.

“To this day, not one of the perpetrators of this crime has been made accountable. Not one has been formally charged in court,” Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Secretary General Renato Reyes Jr. said in a statement.

“A crime was committed yet, for the Philippine government, there seems to be no criminals. Our institutions, from the Ombudsman, to the Department of Justice, and even Congress who probed the incident, have all failed the victims of this brutal incident,” he said.

In Nov. 16, 2004, around 4,000 farmers staged a strike calling for fairer wages from the management of the 6,435-hectare sugar plantation.

Police and military personnel reportedly opened fire at the protesters to disperse them, leaving at least seven farmers killed and hundreds injured.

Reyes blamed Aquino for the lack of justice on the incident that happened eight years ago.

Several groups have been repeatedly calling on the government to find out those responsible for the violent incident and make them accountable.

“As president, Aquino is duty bound to enforce the laws and see to it that justice is rendered for those who were killed. Instead of whining about the media coverage of his regime, Aquino should instead work to address the many human rights abuses committed in the past and present,” Reyes said.

“There can be no positive spin in an incident which reeks of gross injustice. There is no ‘good news’ for the families of the victims still crying out for accountability. There can be no ‘balanced presentation’ when the scales of justice are tilted in favor of the big landlords and the state security forces,” he said in the statement.

Hangat si Abnoy Aquino pa ang President magiging kawawa pa rin ang mga Hacienda Luisita farmers.

It’s common knowledge that Noynoy and his clan have always regarded the Luisita farmers as less than human. Noynoy and his clan would rather spend money on feeding, grooming, maintaining and housing a few expensive thoroughbred Australian horses than feed and school the barefooted children of Luisita farmers. Noynoy and his clan would rather pay millions of dollars to Hollywood showbiz celebrities to grace their Kamiseta(r) billboards along C-5 and elsewhere than create a brighter future for the next generation of Luisita farmers. Noynoy himself would rather spend money on a yellow Porsche than use the same amount to improve the healthcare of Luisita farmers. Almost 30 years ago, Cory had no qualms strafing bullets on unarmed and defenseless farmers who were peacefully picketing along Mendiola. This clan will not give up Hacienda Luisita easily without putting up a dirty fight. Noynoy and his clan have already attempted to use horse whisperers and caretakers as dummy beneficiaries of the land distribution. They still have many tricks up their sleeves. After holding on to land that is not theirs for 55 long years, Noynoy and his clan are completely without remorse. At 52, Noynoy sees nothing wrong in living his entire life by living off the sweat and blood of the poor peasant farmers of Hacienda Luisita. Noynoy would have died of starvation a long long time ago had he relied on selling Nike shoes alone for a living. Without a doubt, Noynoy and his clan are the most potent symbol of how the oligarchy reigns supreme in the Philippines. Without a doubt, they too are the most heartbreaking symbol of how democracy failed the Filipino people.

Just playing out the remaining life of the extended CARP.

If noted botanist Leonardo Co cannot received justice in this country, don’t expect too much for the bare-footed peasants.

  • Your_King

Why does it always seem that this Administration neglects the poor and their interests??

  • Jon

  • kilabot

what type justice? because noykapon has a defective mind, he can only exercise defective justice.

  • $14334231

if it is true that the government once owned the land callled hacienda luisita, “sold” or “leased” to the cojuangco’s (but never paid the government except for taxes), then it is only proper for the government to take it back….or is my “haka-haka” wrong…….

  • Andy

Only in the Philippines !…..The largest slave owner in the country regarded by most filipinos as the champion and defender of freedom and democracy…some filipinos revered the Aquino/Cojuanco dynasty as almost gods!…one of the greatest scam ever invented by yellow politicians and their yellow media allies…have we become  a nation of dummies and fools? NO MORE TO YELLOW DYNASTY ! !
