Number coding scheme for motor vehicles temporarily lifted in Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines—The number-based vehicular traffic reduction scheme has been lifted in most areas of Metro Manila save for Makati and Las Pinas as of Tuesday afternoon, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said.

MMDA Metrobase’s Communication Officer Vincent Lizada said that the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP), more popularly known as the number coding scheme, was lifted Tuesday afternoon for the convenience of motorists heading home, after classes from kindergarten through high school in the metropolis were suspended due to heavy rains brought by tropical storm Juaning.

“The number coding is lifted just for today so people can conveniently make their way home,” Lizada stated. He said the coding scheme would be re-implemented by 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

Under the number coding scheme, motor vehicles with plate numbers ending in 3 and 4 are not allowed on city roads from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays. Most areas (excluding Makati and Las Pinas) have window hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during which excluded vehicles are allowed on the streets.
