Makabayan adopts 5 senatorial bets from 2 major slates

Political alliances for next year’s elections just got stranger after Senate candidates of the two major coalitions received the endorsement of a 3.8-million-strong left-leaning umbrella group that is fielding its own senatorial candidate as well.

The Makabayang Koalisyon ng Mamamayan (Makabayan) on Thursday announced it was taking in as guest candidates Senators Francis Escudero, Loren Legarda and Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, Rep. Cynthia Villar and censors board chair Grace Poe Llamanzares.

With Makabayan’s own candidate, Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Teodoro Casiño, the guest candidates have been dubbed the “6 Senate champions” and the “Super 6,” in an alliance forged on “historical relationships” and “unity on issues.”

“This manifests our confidence in the leadership qualities of the six, their personal integrity and their propeople stand on significant public issues,” said Makabayan president Satur Ocampo in a press conference announcing the alliance.

Common candidates Escudero, Legarda and Llamanzares are also “common” candidates of President Aquino’s coalition ticket and the rival United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) of Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Pimentel used to be with UNA but moved over to the administration side that includes Villar. Villar’s husband, outgoing Sen. Manuel Villar, had waged a bitter presidential campaign against Mr. Aquino in 2010. Legarda was Senator Villar’s running mate then.

Still, Makabayan said it saw nothing “strange” about the Super 6 alliance, given its traditional opposition to the administration and personalities identified with UNA.

“It will not be awkward. We are not strange bedfellows,” said Casiño, rejecting the idea the alliance was “unholy.”

“It’s an honor to be part of this dream team of politicians,” he added.

‘Dream team’

All the candidates but Pimentel showed up to formally accept Makabayan’s endorsement. Gwen Pimentel represented her younger brother, who was presiding over a

Senate committee hearing on political dynasties, an issue that has been raised against a member of Makabayan’s Super 6.

Representative Villar seeks to move to the Senate where her husband is at the end of his second six-year term. Their son Mark is also in politics as Las Piñas representative.

Casiño, whose party-list group has been quite vocal against political dynasties, admitted the Super 6 had yet to come to an agreement on the issue.

“That is not part of the unities that we have made, but we are continuing to work on it. What we did was not let this become a hindrance to cooperation on other equally important issues,” he said in Filipino.

Villar noted the lack of a law that specifically prohibits relatives from running for public

office, other than the provision on term limits. But she said she would willingly leave politics if such a law were enacted.

“We just want to serve. If the law would later say that this is not allowed, we will not run for, after all, we can do other things (other) than running for (a) position,” she said.

Shared advocacies

Villar and Legarda called for a campaign focused on the issues rather than on “personalities.” Ocampo said the five guest candidates received his group’s endorsement because they “shared or agreed to support in varying degrees certain Makabayan advocacies.”

These include: Lowering the prices of oil products, water, power and other basic commodities; pushing for genuine agrarian reform, propeople mining policies and environmental protection; and increasing budgetary allocations for essential social services.

They also agreed to work for the passage of the Freedom of Information Act and Whistle-blowers Act and oppose any “special treatment in handling criminal cases against (former President) Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and other former officials.”

“We will take these issues to the people during the campaign and, after victory, into

the Senate, where the 6 champions will endeavor to translate most of them into legislation,” Ocampo said.

Ocampo said Makabayan had sounded off other senatorial candidates, but many of them were “not as enthusiastic” about being in the coalition. But he said that at least two others may also be taken in as guest candidates.

Citing the principle of “politics is addition,” Casiño said he and the guest candidates would “mutually” benefit from the alliance.

“It’s a very established relationship. We have been through a lot of twists and turns in the past. This relationship is already strong,” he said.

Is this a sign that Bayan Muna and its coalition the Makabayan has been co-opted  and ceased to be a a party of principle and ideology to run of the mill Trapos? How can they be so vocal against political dynasty even introducing HB 3413 an enabling law on political dynasty only to include known personalities belonging to political dynasty like Villar and Escudero?

Welcome to the hypocrites club of double talking politicians Makabayan, such cheap move will now leave just Ang Kapatiran Party as the only political party running on principles and ideology.

Sayang, I would have campaigned for Casino.  But having alligned himself to people like Villar and Escudero, and yes, even Loren, Casino has totally erased his so called principled politics.  For how can his politics principled when he is now allied with people who stands for the things Casino supposedly stands for like anti-dynasty, anti-epal and anti-corruption.  Ah, the Makabayan has again mixed things up.  How can we win?

  • Rap88

I am worried about this leftist group beware that you are not used by them beware of their deceptions the communistic system of using issues people for their own success.Beware of their  cunning specially in our political system but their true intent is to destroy our democracy remember they are Godless they do not use conscience they will do anything even to kill for their own vested interest Maoist,Leninist etc.Kababayan lets help even through info to let our poor brothers Filipino know about the true faces of communism for our Peiopkle and Countries sake.

    • ginvestor

Nak ng tokwa. Anong tinira mo?

      • Datukalun

All the CPP/NPA and the Leftist groups

  • JhadeEstevez

This is what ticks me off on our countrymen. All they see is purely negative on issues like these. Seriously, what have you guys done for our country? ;)

To be honest, am happy that Ms. Legarda is included in Makabayan’s Senate slate. I’ve been an environmentalist since 1997 and am very pleased with her efforts in protecting Mother Nature such as the Clean Air Act which is now a law!  I also commend her for move to preserve our culture and for fighting for women’s rights and children.

Yes, you may call me an avid supporter of the Senator and yes, I may be defending her now but it’s the least I can do compared to what she’s been doing for our country.

What’s important in voting is WHO we are voting for. What have these candidates done for us? What are their accomplishments?

You’ve got my vote again Ms. Legarda, that’s for sure! :)

    • NelsonTamo

      very well said po mam…

    • YourAngeloC

you have a point. we have to check if they have good track records and if they have done something for us.

    • vinzerx

What have I done? I have dutifully paid my taxes without shaving any of it, and I have participated in polling ever since I was legally able to vote. I’m doing my end of the social contract, and I have legal right to complain when the other end fails to do what they’re supposed to be doing.

Are you expecting me to do things that congress does? That’s a seriously erroneous argument to try to compare what a senator can do versus what a private citizen could do.

      • JhadeEstevez

That’s the thing sir. We can do more than just paying taxes and voting. Like you said, it is our DUTY. So it’s something that we are obliged to do whether we like it or not.

I don’t EXPECT everyone to do what our senators or congressmen are doing. But little things can make a difference. Things like volunteering in programs,  participating in advocacies or even the simplest things such as recycling!

Filipinos have the capacity to make a difference and this has been very much evident in times of disasters and turmoil. But we don’t have to wait for those times to come again, right?

      • YourAngeloC

wow. you are right po. we CAN make a difference talaga kasi tayong mga pinoy mahilig naman tumulong talaga.

    • vinzerx

Bakit, ano bang magandang pwede i-comment sa current crop of politicians?

  • 444mangyan888

It would have been more believable had they included Riza Hontiveros. While they may not be in speaking terms with the lady, the issues they commonly fight for are really that close and common.
But anitcs between akbayan and anakbayan recently just made this Casino move simply and plainly “political gimmicry”

  • YourAngeloC

May good goals naman pala ang alliance na ito if you look at it and it’s true that all of them have common advocacies. If they work together, mapapabilis pa at mapupulido pa yung mga goal nila  sa advocacy nila.

  • shotgunjames

If shared naman in terms of advocacies then makakatulong yun. Oh well! In the end naman, di naman party i vote ng mga tao but yung individuals pa din. Gud luck nalang sa kanila

  • sigelangbro

  • virgo57

Look closely who is this Makabayan group and their president, Satur Ocampo. He is endorsing Escudero and Legarda who are sure winners. Villar is dragged because she has an ocean deep pocket that will finance her candidacy that might include the trying hard Casino in their provincial sorties. Expect for more extortion in the form of revolutionary tax as they are in dire needs for funding Casino. This guy is trapped from his illusion and his backward communist doctrine is surely his waterloo. My condolences in your misplaced effort Mr. Casino.

  • captainramius

This is another instant noodle a Party pala in the Philippine Politics.  Reason why we are not going anywhere is our politics is based on personalities , people driven than principle driven or issue driven.  If you ask these parties what are there advocacy and principles like what the Republicans and the Democrats in the states, they will just answer the same motherhood statements like…. para sa masa, para sa mahihirap…tawag ng taong bayan…etc.

Party Yelloy, Red, Pink, Blue, Green at White… if say si Legarda nasa 3 parties e technicolor tawag doon.   Anyway naging comedy na din itong mga political parties natin why not make it more Colorful ?

  • Patuboom

  • YuniceSibug

Let us be realistic, boboto ba tayo ng mga candidates na walang alam gawin at puro pasikat lang like chiz and FPJ’s daughter, isama na din natin ang asawa ng naligo sa ilog ng basura.really, would you vote for those people?we’re not that stupid naman dba to vote for them.

  • MikaelRabang

  • Felipe Torres

Ang sabi ni Cynthia Villar …..
she will run because there is a “lack of a law that specifically prohibits relatives from running for public office”.  She further says that, “she would willingly leave politics if such a law were enacted for, after all, we can do other things (other) than running for (a) position.

    Ang sabi namin,
Huwag ka na lang tumakbo.  DO THE HONOURABLE THING”  Huwag nang hintayin yang law detailing the guidelines prohibiting political dynasties. Kunwa-kunwari pang gustong mag-serve.
