MANILA, Philippines—Muntinlupa City Representative Rodolfo Biazon on Wednesday advised Philippine National Police chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome to opt for early retirement instead of being placed on non-duty status.

In a statement, the former Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff said that retiring early would be a better alternative than waiting it out on floating status “all the way up to March.”

“The best move to support the President’s decision is to retire early,” he said.

Biazon explained that it would allow the next PNP chief enough time to plan for the upcoming midterm elections as well as the campaign period leading to the polls.

“Plans will have to be made in accordance with developing situations. But this plan must be made by who will implement it especially addressing the problem of private armies, different armed groups including the Cafgus [Citizen Armed Force Geographical Units] and the Cafgu auxiliaries, which are supposed to be under the control of the PNP,” said Biazon.

He said Cafgus could pose a threat to the campaign and election periods and that it was “important that the new PNP chief must supervise the development of the plan and implement it.”
