7 killed bus accident in Cebu

CEBU CITY—Seven passengers were killed on Saturday night when the bus they were riding slammed on a concrete fence near a school in Toledo City, about 50 km west of this city.
Jegans Bus Liner was on its way to Toledo past 7 p.m. when the vehicle hit the concrete fence near the Uncrona chapel and the Don Andres Soriano High School, according to report from radio station dySS.
According to a radio report, at least 25 passengers were brought to Carmen Copper Hospital and 19 were brought to hospitals in Cebu City.
Three of the seven fatalities died at the Toledo City District Hospital while the four succumbed to injuries at the Carmen Copper Hospital, the same report said.
Pinamungajan Mayor Geraldine Yapha, owner of the bus liner, told radio station dyAB that most of the passengers were from her town. She, however, assured that they would provide assistance to the casualties.
Resident Donna Faye Loayon said the crash site is a blind curve which is considered as accident-prone.
“Several vehicles had met an accident there. There was a motorcycle that was hit by a truck. The passengers were killed,” said Laoyon who lives 30 meters away from the accident.
In July 2010, at least 15 passengers were killed and 48 others were wounded when a Corominas bus rammed into the fence of a residential house on the same spot.
After the incident, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) built a concrete perimeter fence in the area.
