Magnitude 5 quake hits off Eastern Samar

MANILA, Philippines—A magnitude 5 earthquake struck off Guiuan in the central Philippine province of Eastern Samar at 6:58 p.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injury from the quake which centered 87 kilometers northeast of Guiuan. It has a shallow depth of 16 kilometers.
The Philippines sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
