Councilor killed in Bohol accident

One dead while seven others were injured in a road accident in Ubay town, Bohol Wednesday night.

The victims were among the 6,000 government workers and officials in Bohol who attended the 1st Barangay Day Celebration in Tagbilaran City.

President Noynoy Aquino graced the event earlier, where several barangay employees and officials were awarded for their outstanding performance. The event was finished past 4 p.m.

The group was on board a van-for-hire from Tagbilaran City going to their hometown, Carlos P. Garcia, when they met an accident along the national highway of Purok 4, Calanggaman, some 7 km from Poblacion Ubay, where the victims were supposed to take a boat for President Garcia town. Their V-hire rammed into a parked 10-wheeler Fuso cargo truck around 7 p.m.

Association of Barangay Councils president of Carlos P. Garcia Ricardo Galo Jr., who seated at the front seat died on the spot.

His wife, Ester who seated beside him was reportedly in serious condition and was undergoing treatment in a hospital in Tagbilaran City, according to Ubay Police Station desk officer SP02 Diomedes Boyonas.

Other injured victims were Carlos P. Garcia Vice Mayor Nestor Abad, councilors Pelayo Boiser, Narciso Bacolpo and Renato Sapanta, municipal bookkeeper Caridad Legaspi and van driver Bartolome Mendez.

Based on the police investigation, Mendez was avoiding an approaching vehicle but hit the truck instead.

Mendez and Dabuyan were both detained at the Ubay police station pending the investigation and possible filing of charges against them. /Correspondents Carine Asutilla and Jhunnex Napallacan
