4, 271 families evacuated in Marikina; classes in all levels suspended Wednesday

MANILA, Philippines—Thousands are displaced in Marikina City on Tuesday as heavy rains spawned by southwest monsoon continue.

Around 4,271 families were evacuated in Marikina and were housed in 22 evacuation centers, the Marikina Public Information Office (PIO) said on its official Twitter account.

“As of 1:30 p.m. meron na po tayong 4,271 families/ 23,331 persons na nakalagay sa 22 na evacuation centers sa buong Marikina ,” the Marikina Public Information Office (PIO) said.

It also said that as of 1:15 pm, the water level of Marikina river has reached 20.6 meters.

The city government also suspended classes on all levels for Wednesday, August 8.

“As per Vice Mayor Cadiz, Walang pasok all levels sa Marikina bukas, August 8, 2012,” the post said.

During tropical storm Ondoy in 2009, Marikina river swelled to 23 meters above sea level.
