It’s either a Senate seat or Cebu City Hall for Mimo
It’S either the Senate or the mayorship of Cebu City for Emilio “Mimo” Osmeña III, eldest son of former Cebu governor Emilio “Lito” Osmeña.
Mimo, who launched an AM radio program a few months ago, dismissed speculations that he would run for the 1st congressional district of Cebu, a seat that will be vacated in 2013 by Rep. Eduardo Gullas.
Mimo said he’s a registered voter of barangay Malubog in Cebu City’s northern district.
“I have no plans to run for Congress in whatever district. Even if I’m interested, I can’t join the provincial political scene because I remain a resident of Cebu City,” he said in a radio interview.
Mimo’s father Lito earlier floated the possibility that his son would run in the 2013 elections in any of four posts – as a senator, congressman, governor or mayor.
The elder Osmeña was quoted earlier as saying they would launch a massive media campaign to promote his son’s name.
But Mimo said while his father floated his name, he’s still undecided about whether to seek public office next year.
Mimo said his radio program was purely for public service.
If he decides to run, Mimo said it’s either a Senate seat or the m ayorship of Cebu City.
“But (that) is almost zero possibility for now,” he said, adding that he would only run if there’s an emergency that would force him.
“I’m so busy with my own projects. I have no plans at all for now. Unless there’s an emergency, I closed the door a long time ago,” Mimo said.
In Cebu City, disagreements within the national leadership of the PDP-Laban are delaying the visit of Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III to Cebu where he’s supposed to swear in local allies to the party.
Former south district congressman Antonio Cuenco said Pimentel texted him last week to inform him about the delays.
The setback was caused by his objections to the entry of former senator Juan Miguel Zubiri in the United National Alliance (UNA).
“Senator Pimentel told me in a text message that he is still trying to look for a good date to come to Cebu,” said Cuenco.
Until a date for their oath taking is set, Cuenco said he is scheduled to leave for Jakarta, Indonesia where he’s based as secretary general of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.
Cuenco downplayed claims by Bando Osmeña-Pundok Kauswagan (BO-PK) that third term councilor Rodrigo Abellano is leading in surveys for the city’s south district.
Cuenco said he remains confident that het has the support of 30 of the 32 south district barangay captains who earlier signed a manifesto asking him to run again for the south district.
Cuenco said he and allies in Team Rama are still looking for a name for their group. He said he wanted the group to be called Cebu United Democratic Party.
