Barangay Ginebra crawls back from 17 points down to defeat eliminated Alaska

The Barangay Ginebra Kings outscored the eliminated Alaska Aces in the third period to score a come-from-behind 90-81 win last night in the 37th PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Kings trailed by as many as 17 points in the second quarter but a 32-19 run in the third allowed them to get back in the game by tying the contest at 65-all, going into the fourth.

Ginebra completed its comeback by outscoring Alaska in the final quarter, 25-16, as the Kings boosted their playoffs bid with their fourth win in seven games.

The Kings started the payoff period with an 8-1 run to go up, 73-66.

Ginebra torched Alaska with its outside shooting as Mark Caguioa, Mike Cortez and KG Canaleta each fired a three-pointer in a 9-0 blast that saw the Kings surging to an 82-68 lead.

Caguioa led the way for the Kings with 22 points, while import Cedric Bozeman had 15 markers. Big man Enrico Villanueva played a big part in the Kings’ third quarter surge as he scored eight of his 12 points in that stretch.

Villanueva went four-for-four from the field in Ginebra’s telling run. Mike Cortez also scored in double figures with 12 points.

Jason Forte scored 20 points for the Aces, who succumbed to their fifth straight loss and seventh overall in eight games.

LA Tenorio and Gabby Espinas pitched in 12 points each, while Cyrus Baguio had 11.
