3rd St. Ignatius Run to feature 16k race

07:22 AM June 21, 2012

This year’s Saint Ignatius de Loyola run will be a lot tougher than the previous two editions after race organizers decided to include a longer distance in the event slated on July 28 starting at the new Insular Square in Mandaue City.

Distances to be featured this year are the inaugural 16-kilometer run as well as the 6k and 3k races. The event is being organized by the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Alumni Association (SHSAAA) and the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Athletic and Basketball Alumni Association (SHSAABAA) in celebration of the feast day of Jesuits founder Saint Ignatius de Loyola.

Last year, the organizers were able to attract 1,500 runners when it was held at the SHS-A campus in Canduman. However, in a bid to make the race more open to the public, they decided to stage it at the Insular Square.

The race was officially launched yesterday at the Insular Square spearheaded by SHSAAA president Edmun Liu along with SHAABAA president Marcelino Co and Insular Square treasurer Wilky Lim and race director Prescillano Capangpangan.

Proceeds of the running event will fund SHSAAA and SHSAABAA’s social projects and charity works like feeding programs, operation tuli and medical missions.

The 16k and 6k will be open to the public while a special 6k category is open only to SHS-A alumni. The 3k event is for SHS-A staff, faculty and students.

The official route will traverse the national highway going north in Mandaue City and will head left to United Nations avenue going left again to the road leading to Cansaga bridge in Lilo-an and back. Some 60 traffic enforcers will be tapped to ensure runners’ safety excluding race marshals.

The top three 16k winners will take home P8,000, P6,000 and P4,000 respectively while fourth to 10th placers will get P500 each.

The top three finishers in the 6k division will get P2,500, P2,000 and P1,500 respectively with P300 going to 4th to 10th placers while winners in the 3k division will pocket P2,000, P1,500 and P1,000 for the first three with P200 going tro the rest of the top 10 finishers.

The 6k team champion will receive P3,000 while P2,000 and P1,000 go to the second and third placers, respectively.
