3 killed, 2 hurt in shooting in S. Korea

SEOUL — Officials say a South Korean marine corporal has killed three marines and wounded two in a shooting spree at a military base on an island in the Yellow Sea.

A Defense Ministry official said Monday that the shooting on Ganghwa Island was being investigated. The official wouldn’t give his name because of office rules.

Ganghwa Island is about 40 miles (70 kilometers) west of Seoul.

The tense island lies near the disputed maritime border with North Korea.
