Lightning kills Naga fisherman

07:56 AM May 11, 2012

A 52-year-old man died after being struck by lighting while fishing off the coast of barangay Colon, Naga City, southern Cebu, yesterday morning.

Despite the rains, Rolando Lim went against his wife Veronica’s advice and fished off the waters of Colon. Witnesses said they were 100 meters away from the victim when he was hit and fell down from his boat at 5:45 a.m. yesterday.

When the fishermen went near the fishing boat, they saw an unconscious man lying face-down and holding a fishing rod inside the boat, PO1 Marlon Añabeza of the Minglanilla police said.

Funeral staff said the family already brought the body to their residence.

Lim, a resident of Central Poblacion, Naga City, caught three fishes before the freak accident happened.

He was rushed to the Minglanilla District Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Pagasa weather analyst Vangie Tolentino said the heavy downpour and lightning were caused by the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) over Mindanao.

Tolentino said the cumulonimbus cloud yesterday morning was very thick, which could have triggered the lightning incident in Naga City. Correspondents Jhunnex Napallacan and Gabriel C. Bonjoc
