MANILA, Philippines – Majority agree that President Benigno Aquino III made the right decision in rejecting the proposed P125 wage increase for workers, an INQUIRER.net survey showed.

It showed that 67.63 percent of poll participants or 961 respondents agreed with Aquino while 32.37 percent or 460 disagreed.
A total of 1,421 readers participated in the online survey.

Aquino made his decision known on May 1, Labor Day, saying that the P125 across-the-board wage increase would cost the economy P1.43 trillion annually.
He said the economy was only worth P8 to P9 trillion and a wage increase of this scale would lead to higher prices of goods and services.

Aquino came up with the figure by multiplying P125 by 22 working days in a month, then by 13months in a year(taking into consideration the mandatory annual 13th month pay) and by 40 million which is the number of Filipino employees.

Aquino, however, promised instead a P11.2 billion educational assistance and P1.1 billion skills upgrade for government employees.
