STC wants FB case re-raffled to Family Court

ST. Theresa’s College (STC) yesterday asked the court to re-raffle to a family court the Facebook “bikini” case where five students were barred from their high school graduation as punishment for their misconduct.

STC lawyer Joan Largo said the school is seeking clarification on who should handle the case.

The family court has jurisdiction over violations of child abuse and ‘all allegations point to child abuse,” she explained.

Last month, Regional Trial Court Judge Manuel Patalinghug of Branch 22, a family court, let go of the case saying it should have been raffled to a regular court.

He said that civil actions for injunction, which is the nature of the case filed against STC, “does not squarely fall within the ambit of the cases properly cognizable by family courts” even if it involved minors.

He said the family court deals with criminal cases.

Four girls sued STC after they were banned from attending their graduation ceremony last March 30 as punishment for posting “lewd” photos of themselves on Facebook.

One of the girls later decided to enter into a compromise agreement with STC. /Ador Vincent S. Mayol
