Mapfre Insular Insurance Corporation (MIIC) in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Cebu City government will stage Go Run: For Road Safety on July 1 at The Terraces at the Ayala Center Cebu.

The race features 100-meter dash, 200m dash, 1-kilometer, 3k, 6k and 12k categories.

The event aims to promote road safety in the country. The organizers aim to encourage elementary students to learn about road safety and its importance.

“This will be our initiative to spread the awareness about road safety. This will also be a response to the United Nations’ bid to strengthen road safety awareness in the whole world,” said MIIC senior vice president Alexander Reyes during yesterday’s official launching at the Laguna Garden Cafe at the Terraces.

MIIC chose Cebu to stage their first-ever running event because of the popularity of the sport in the city.

Joining Reyes during the launch were MIIC Cebu branch head Neil Ceniza, CITOM executive director Rafael Christopher Yap and DepEd Education Program specialist Nerisa Beltran.

Exciting cash prizes are at stake in the running event except in the 100m and 200m races.

The official route will pass through the Banilad Road until Cabancalan, Mandaue City.

Joel Baring, the race director, will ban foreign runners—particularly Kenyan runners—from joining the running event to give way to local runners.

“Most of our local elite runners’ income comes from races so they have to be given a chance to win,” said Baring, who will allow foreign runners to join the non-competitive side of the race.

Registration fee is pegged at P250 for the short-distance races while P350 is pegged for the 6k and 12k categories.
