Road Mishap
A mother was injured while her 3-month-old son was killed when a van side-swiped them on a a roadside in barangay Kawit, Medellin, north Cebu, on Sunday.
Daria Tumakay is in critical condition in a Cebu City hospital. Her baby Jhon Niño died of severe head injuries.
Police said the van driver, barangay captain Rene Olivar of Lamintac Norte, Medellin town surrendered. He may have been intoxicated but refused to undergo a liquor test. Charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide will be filed./REPORTER RHEA RUTH V. ROSELL

in dumajug town
A 70-year-old woman was found dead in barangay Lawaan, Dumanjug town, southern Cebu, last Sunday.
Sansa Belocura, a member of the barangay lupon, bore wounds on her right eye, mouth, forehead and a ligature mark on her neck. A barangay tanod found her body on a foot path about 200 meters from her house past 7 p.m.
Her cell phone was missing but her wallet and a plastic bag of groceries were intact./reporter rhea ruth rossel

capsizes off bohol
The Coast guard rescued seven persons, most of them children, after a motor banca heading to Talisay City capsizied off Handayan, Bohol Island, on Sunday.
They include the banca operator’s eight-month pregnant wife Clementina Augues; their two children aged 7 and 12, Jenilrose Cuarez, 17; and two other minors aged 12 and 1.
The passengers were in the water for 15 minutes with no lifejackets and were rescued by a passing vessel M.V. Starcraft 5 heading to Pier 1, Cebu City, said Cebu Gocast Guard Commander Rolando Punzalan.
The boat left Handayan at 5:10 p.m. and was expected to arrive in Talisay City in half an hour.
Passengers said a sack got entangled in the propeller blade which the banca operator tried to fix by getting in the water. The banca capsized when he held on to the outrigger for balance./ REPORTER RHEA RUTH V. ROSELL

A 37-YEAR-OLD overseas worker was arrested by police in Mandaue City after making false promises to help an ex-officemate find a a job in Dubai.
Renan Vega of Cabangcalan, Mandaue City, who worked in the Dubai airport, was arrested in an entrapment operation in a fast-food chain at barangay Maguikay after receiving P6,000 in marked money.
He had promised to help his friend, Jeremias Farofaldino Jr., 33, process a visa for Dubai.
Farofaldino told police he already gave at least P40,000 and was assured he could leave for Dubai on May 6.
The two used to be officemates in Innodata in Mandaue City.
When Farofaldino found out that his friend was still in Cebu and had not left for Dubai on April 10 as earlier told, he sought police advice. They set a trap.
He met with his friend, gave him P6,000 in marked money and the police made the arrest.
Vega denied committing any fraud, and said he was indeed processing the victim’s papers. Vega said he was willing to return the money because the incident had embarrassed him.
He is now detained the Casuntingan police station pending the filing of a complaint for illegal recruitment. /correspondents Fe Marie D. Dumaboc and Norman Mendoza
