Taiwan plans to buy 4 warships from US – report

TAIPEI – Taiwan plans to purchase four warships from the United States as part of the island’s efforts to modernize its forces against former rival China, local media reported Sunday.

The defense ministry briefed President Ma Ying-jeou on the proposed arms deal during a meeting last month and is prepared to set aside the budget next year, the United Daily News said, without specifying the cost.

The ministry declined to comment on the report.

If finalized, the arms deal will increase to 12 the total number of such warships owned by Taiwanese navy.

The four Perry-class frigates, separately built in the 1980s and to be retired by the US navy lately, are aimed to replace the Taiwan navy’s fleet of eight Knox-class frigates, the daily said.

Tensions between Taiwan and China have eased markedly since President Ma Ying-jeou of the Beijing-friendly Kuomintang party came to power in 2008 on a platform of beefing up trade links and allowing more Chinese tourists to visit.

Ma was re-elected for a second term in January.

China however has still refused to renounce its use of force against Taiwan even though the island has governed itself for more than 60 years after their split in 1949 at the end of a civil war.

“Split in 1949″?  PDI makes it sound like an amicable settlement.  haha

In 1949, the US-backed army of Gen. Chiang Kai-Shek abandoned the mainland and ran away to Formosa province and established his “nationalist” govt there.  Mao’s armies were poised to chase and invade Formosa and finish him off when the US invaded North Korea and was threatening China’s border.  Mao ordered an about-face and marched his armies on foot all the way to Korea and pushed McArthur’s forces out of North Korea.  If not for that, there would be no Taiwan.

US may have diverted China’s attention for awhile Nixon opened diplomatic relations with China in 1975 and this has delayed China’s plans to unify Taiwan.  But now that she is ready to challenge the US for regional superiority, Taiwan will be getting more attention again.

What Filipino’s seem to ignore is the fact that China will not attack Taiwan first without protecting her flanks – meaning, they will neutralize the American military bases in the PH, Korea and Japan and cut off Taiwan’s supply lines before invading.

This is exactly what Japan did in 1941 when their target was the oil fields in Malacca – they had to protect their flanks by neutralizing US forces in Pearl Harbor and the PH.

No Taiwan!!!  Those Perry Class warships will go to the Philippines!  Taiwan is too far away yet they wanna claim a Philippine territory.  We are really in need to make these countries who disrespects us realize that respect goes both ways.

Taiwan to buy 4-warships???? Taiwan and China are the same blood but pretends to be enemies. They’re .just making a drama to suck USA military technology. If you’ll sell those four warships  to Taiwan, its like selling them to communist China.  These two blood relatives already have a secret  pact.

The Philippines will buy 3 more frigates from the US and Israel will donate 25 brand new fighter planes.Japan will donate 4 more frigates (2001 model). UK will donate 25 units of brand new tanks.  France will donate 10 units of brand new fighter jets. Korea will donate 5 million units of M249 and 10 million units of M16 rifles.

Once we received these new military hardware, the AFP will have these new lineup:
     - 8 units frigates/warships
     - 35 brand new units fighter jets
     - 25 units of brand  new tanks
     - brand new rifles:
        – 5 million units – M249
        – 10 million units – M16

Of course, we cannot yet beat China with these mere hardware but we can more than hold our own against the Chinese until the US and its allies come to our aid.
