ZAMBOANGA CITY—Veterinarians have joined hands to help save Kabang, a native dog that saved two girls from a speeding motorcycle but lost half of her snout in the process and is now facing infection.

Dr. Edgardo Unson, of the veterinary clinic Animal House, said veterinarians and pet lovers nationwide are determined to save Kabang.

“We are doing this because she is a hero dog and her story touched so many hearts,” said Unson.

Unson was here yesterday with Dr. Maan Joy Malazo, also of Animal House, for a meeting with Dr. Mario Ariola, city veterinarian, and Dr. Anton Lim, another veterinarian, to discuss how to prevent infection from destroying Kabang’s immune system.

FEATURED STORIES

Mona Consunji, of the group Animal Welfare Coalition, earlier coordinated with pet owners and animal lovers on how to save Kabang, after the dog was featured in the Inquirer for her heroic act last December.

Kabang threw herself on the path of a speeding motorcycle that was about to hit the dog’s young masters—Dina Bunggal, 11, and Princess Diansing, 3. She suffered a disfigured face, losing half of her snout.

The veterinarians and the dog owner, Rudy Bunggal, brought Kabang for X-ray to a clinic here to determine the extent of the damage to her face.

The dog’s open wound was also tested for infection in Lim’s clinic.

Several other tests were made on Kabang, according to Lim. She was checked for worms and mites. Her blood was tested for parasites. Julie S. Alipala, Inquirer Mindanao
