Guard dies in attempt to foil robbery

A security guard foiled a robbery attempt at a money transfer establishment but lost his life, according to a police report. Senior Inspector Edilberto Nicanor, deputy chief of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, identified the victim as Roland Dadap, 45, a security guard of D’Champ Security Agency. Nicanor said Dadap suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died on the spot. The police official said that two men entered a branch of Western Union Money Transfer around 4:30 p.m. on Quirino Highway in Barangay (village) Talipapa, Quezon City, but were stopped by the victim who wanted to frisk them first for weapons. “But instead of yielding to the guard, one of the suspects pulled out a gun and fired at the victim, hitting him several times,” police said. After the shooting, witnesses said the two men took the victim’s service firearm and fled on a motorcycle. No one was able to get the vehicle’s license plate. Witnesses described the robbers as between 30 and 35 years old. Both were wearing caps at the time of the robbery attempt.—Nancy C. Carvajal

Art in the Park on Feb. 18

The familiar white tents of “Art in the Park” will once again dot the grounds of Jaime Velasquez Park in Salcedo Village in Makati City on February 18. Now in its fifth year, the annual art fair stays true to its intent of making art more accessible by taking it out of the intimidating confines of the gallery and bringing it to the unrestricted spaces of the outdoors. From 2 p.m. to midnight, art aficionados, collectors or just the plain curious can pop into any one of the tents and, perhaps, come away with pieces that are not only beautiful, but easy on the pocket as well. “Art in the Park” has capped its prices at P30,000. The majority of the pieces, however, are pegged at way below this ceiling price. This year, there will be more than 40 exhibitors, showcasing paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs. The art fair is a project of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines.
