3-teams tie for lead in Sinulog chess

ROSE Pharmacy Inc. Team B, Julie’s Bakeshop and Colonnade Chess Team finished in a tie for the top spot in last weekend’s 2012 Sinulog Open Chess Team Tournament held at the SM City Cebu.

All three teams wound up with 11 points after seven rounds. Bohol Matwood Chess Team bagged second place with 10 points together with Lanao Achiever, University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, Southern Man Shirts and USC Team A.

In the seventh round, Rose Pharmacy B finished with a draw against Julie’s Bakeshop, 2-2, while the Colonnade Chess team edged Southern Man Shirt, 3.5-0.5.

A total of P72,000 were given to the winners of this tournament organized by the Cebu Executive and Professionals Chess Association and the Cebu City government.

Lapu-Lapu Pawn Pusher and the VizMin Team finished with nine points each to claim the third place honors.

National Master (NM) Elmer Sumngat of Bohol Matwood, Carlos Moreno III of Rose Pharmacy Team A, Justin Flint Misa from team VisMin, Wilhem Jhoy Ardiente and Dennis Navales of SMC-SLC were named board medalists in the tournament.  /CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
