/ 05:14 AM December 06, 2011

JAKARTA—A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Papua region in Indonesia’s far east early Tuesday, US seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, and no tsunami alert.

The quake occurred near the southern coast of Papua at 4:28 am (1928 GMT Monday) with an epicentre 129 kilometers (80 miles) north of Dobo, the US Geological Survey said. It struck at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity through earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
