A 20-year-old inmate of the Makati City Jail was wounded on Monday after he was shot by a guard while trying to escape.

Carlgie Restillero sustained gunshot wounds on the left leg and right arm after he tried to break out by scaling the four-meter-high prison walls on Lawton Avenue at Barangay Northside Proper at 2:40 p.m.

In an interview, Supt. Emmanuel Bang-asan, the city jail warden, said that Restillero, from “out of the blue,” asked for permission to throw some trash in a dump near his office which was a single-story structure.

Jail Officer 2 Jeffrey Bueno said that after Restillo climbed on the roof of the warden’s office, the inmate started scaling the prison wall.

Warning shots

Bueno said he shouted at Restillo to come down but the latter ran away, prompting him to fire warning shots.

Another guard, Jail Officer 1 Miguelito Turaray III, ran outside the jail compound and spotted Restillero.

According to a Makati police report, Turaray ordered the inmate to lie down on the ground, but the latter attacked him with an improvised knife.

This prompted Turaray to draw his 9-mm service pistol and shoot Restillero.

The inmate was taken to Ospital ng Makati although he was released and returned to the city jail on Tuesday.

Bang-asan said that Restillero could not be returned to his old cell because he had stabbed a fellow inmate before his escape.

It was learned that he owned money to the victim and had refused to pay his debt.

Restillero was committed to the city jail on Aug. 22, pending his trial on charges of illegal possession of bladed weapon, malicious mischief and grave threats.

Guards commended

Bang-asan, meanwhile, commended Bueno and Turaray for stopping the escape.
