According to the Department of Health (DOH), several barangays in Metro Manila experienced leptospirosis outbreaks and an increase in the number of deaths due to the disease in June. From January to July 3 this year, the DOH recorded 368 leptospirosis cases and 52 deaths in the National Capital Region. Most of the cases were in Quezon City which reported 40 cases, and in Taguig City which had 16 cases. A total of 105 cases were observed from June 10 to July 3, 38 percent higher than the average of 76 cases reported in the past five years. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
