The educational requirement for aspiring policemen should be lowered down to high school graduates, Quezon City Police District (QCPD) director Chief Superintendent Joselito Esquivel Jr. urged on Saturday.

Esquivel said that undergraduates tend to prove themselves more in service than those degree holders.

“Kapag high school graduate ka when you enter the police service, if ever allowed by law,  ‘pag pumasok ka ika nga ikaw ‘yung less ‘yung qualification in terms of education so you try to prove yourself,” Esquivel said during a news forum.

(If you are a high school graduate, when you enter the police service, if ever allowed by law, you have less qualification in terms of education so you try to prove yourself.)

“Siguro dapat ibalik na natin yung high school graduate kasi mas madaling pasunurin. Eto (degree holders) pagpasok pa lang may angas na eh, ‘di mo na mautusan eh, wala pang napo-prove ganun na kataas ang ego eh,” he added.

(Maybe it’s time we go back hiring high school graduates because they tend to follow diligently. These degree holders, however, when they enter the service they display some kind of arrogance, you cannot give orders to them anymore even if they have nothing to prove yet… they have high ego.)

The QCPD chief also said that undergraduates have the drive to succeed and learn the language of law in the country.

Esquivel then recalled that during the days of the Philippine Constabulary (PC), high school graduates were still allowed to enter the police force in the country.

PC was the police force in the country prior to the Philippine National Police.

“During the PC days, you really try to prove something na ‘even ako ay high school graduate kaya ko mag deliver ng trabaho’ so lahat ng available schooling mag schooling ka to better yourself. ‘Pag high school [graduate] andun ‘yung drive to succeed… to be better and [have] better knowledge about the law,” Esquivel said. /jpv
