Malacañang on Thursday said it welcomed any congressional investigation into President Duterte’s directive to the police to crack down on “tambay” (loiterers), saying the presidential order was aimed at increasing police visibility to thwart crimes.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque reminded the public that President Duterte himself had said that anyone could question his directive.

The Senate and House of Representatives are launching inquiries into the police crackdown on tambay, which the President first ordered last year.

Sen. Bam Aquino sought an inquiry following the death of 25-year-old Genesis Argoncillo and reports of arbitrary arrests.

In the House, the Makabayan bloc asked the chamber’s human rights committee to look into the crackdown which had so far resulted in the arrest of more than 7,000 persons since June 13.

Congress’ duty

At a press briefing, Roque said it was Congress’ duty to conduct an investigation.

“We also welcome challenges before the Supreme Court. The President has said so,” he said.
