The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) reminded the public on Tuesday that tricycles should not be used as school services.

In a letter addressed to Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Danilo Lim, the LTFRB said vans, mini buses, coasters, and buses are the only vehicles allowed to be used as school services.

“Tricycles are not one of the above stated allowed types of vehicles for school transport service,” LTFRB chairman Martin Delgra said in his letter.

Delgra also noted that should passengers of tricycles figure in a road accident, they will not be covered by mandatory comprehensive insurance.

“Noteworthy is that the passengers of tricycles used as School Transport Service are not covered by the mandatory comprehensive insurance being mandated by LTFRB,” he said.

The LTFRB earlier said that it would seek a ban on the use of tricycles as school service.

According to data from the MMDA, nearly 3,700 road accidents involving tricycles were recorded last year, 14 of which resulted in deaths.   /muf
